Washington Legislature Goes into Overtime

March 30, 2010 By Brittany Quigley

The regular session of the Washington Legislature ended with the score seemingly tied 0 to 0 between House and Senate. Both bodies had budget ideas to close the projected deficit in the state, but neither could win the support of the other for a plan. At this writing, the Legislature is still in session with negotiations over tax ideas and budget reductions. When the Governor convened the overtime session, she indicated that she wanted the session to focus in only two areas – an approved budget and efforts to create jobs. Somewhat out of the limelight at the moment, but ready to enter the game at any time is HB 2561. This bill sponsored by Rep. Hans Dunshee (D- Snohomish) would create a state bond fund of $860M to provide grants for energy efficiency improvements in schools and other public facilities. As it is the only credible piece of jobs legislation on the table, there remains some possibility that it could be there to help cut down the nets when time expires (OK, I am done with March Madness references.).
