Oregon Legislature – Update

February 25, 2015 By Brittany Quigley

The talk of the town in Oregon, of course, is the recent resignation of John Kitzhaber as Governor and the ascension of the state’s Secretary of State, Kate Brown, as Oregon’s new Governor.  Governor Brown, largely known as a progressive politician, brings a history of strong support for environmental issues in the state.  Gov. Brown has not, predictably, had much of an opportunity to establish a record on energy efficiency issues however.  Given the rapid turn of events in the state, it will likely take some period of time for issues and priorities for the Governor and the Legislature to sort themselves out.  Bills emanating from the Oregon Department of Energy and prioritized by the former Governor remain in play.  Of particular note is the effort to provide grant funding for energy efficiency investments in K-12 schools in areas of the state not served by the Energy Trust of Oregon.  Though no bill language has yet been introduced, there are rumors of a bill that would introduce energy performance disclosure and a rating system for both residential and commercial buildings.
