Energy Trust Builds on 2010 Work in EPS and Industrial Efficiency

January 24, 2011 By Brittany Quigley

At its January 2011 Conservation Advisory Committee meeting, the Energy Trust provided results and analysis of its efforts in residential energy performance scoring (EPS) as well as it highly successful “90×90” industrial efficiency program for 2010. The Trust continues to examine approaches for an asset rating system for the energy performance of homes, concluding that simple approaches are nearly as accurate as more complex ones but uncertain still on the best (read more motivating) way to present that information to homeowners. As one of 10 recipients of a US DOE pilot of the Home Energy Score (www.homeenergyscore.gov) system, the Trust will be implementing a pilot in early 2011 to determine what it thinks is the best approach to EPS. Meanwhile, on the industrial front, their 2010 “90×90” program effort was very successful delivering highly cost effective electricity savings. (This program approach emphasized quick hitting O&M type activities that were inexpensive to implement – in contrast to the typical long development times for capital projects in the industrial sector.) The program was a myth buster finding that industrial customers in reality don’t typically implement measures with less than one year payback without technical and/or financial assistance – and not all the low hanging fruit has actually been picked. The Trust intends to follow up this success with a similar effort in 2011 focusing on natural gas opportunities.
